Better late than never, right? Last weekend I made it down to the cities in celebration of Kelly's birthday. I got there early so we could get our hair done at Denny Kemp. Kelly chopped off 5 inches and ended up with the cutest cut. Then we met up with friends for dinner at Barrio followed by drinks and karaoke at the Uptown VFW. Kelly was animal/house sitting so I got to stay with her at the house and hangout with 1 cat, 3 dogs, fish, a bird, and 2 turtles. So fun.

aaahh. so many good things this weekend!


Lets just say the start of the weekend was drastically different than the ending. It started out with family Christmas hosted by my brother, Ryan. My dad (in purple cast-for the vikings, he says. duh) made his famous lasagna as he does every year and I finally got a chance to see my grandparents whom I haven't seen in months.


Saturday was a whole different ballgame. We went to see I Do Believe (Ben and I bought the "Last Time") and then made our way to the Red Stag for Haley Bonar and a dance partay.

Oh yeah, and Christmas is 5 days away. what the what?

yeah...remember when i wrote being sick wasn't so terrible? i regret writing that. i was assuming that i would get better soon so i would still have the weekend to have fun (or at least leave the house). nope. whatever i caught is still haunting me and i hope none of you get it. being sick is a downer. thankfully, i am on the up and up.

i didn't take many picture of the weekend, but i did manage to take these two of ben's wonderful creation. after listening to Jim Lehey on the Splendid Table (a must listen!) discuss his "revolutionary bread" recipe, ben went and bought a cast iron pot and made the Panne all'Olive bread. it's a no knead recipe that just involves mixing everything in a bowl, letting it sit for 18 hours, and throwing into a cast iron pot to bake. wow. you MUST try it. it is so tasty and i can't wait to toast it and make a sandwich. i don't think we ever have to buy bread again.

I only took a few pictures this weekend. Most are of some of the new things I've recently aquired. After blogging about how much I adored the tote Anabela would be selling at Little Winter, she contacted me saying she had a few extra for purchase. I received mine in the mail Friday and love it so much! I am hoping to bring it to Chicago next week.


I also went on a little shoe shopping trip with Ben on Saturday. I've been having some minor back and knee pain, and needed some comfortable shoes desperately for work. I was little hesitant to get a pair of Dansko's since they aren't the coolest looking shoes, but after I tried on a pair of their black clogs I was sold. They are a dream to walk in and I actually think they look pretty cute with tights and dresses.

Other weekend activities included:


- Estate sales where I scored the little accordion man. I've been collecting little xmas figurines all year and I can't wait to put them out.
- A birthday celebration
- Lost marathon. One episode left!
-I finally brought in my huge wooden ship Ben gave me. I am hoping to fix it up over these winter months. It's gigantic.
- Enjoying the sunshine with walks.

weekend nutshell: eating dinner in a revolving rooftop restaurant (still feeling iffy about this), boardwalk runs, love story, hiking with argos, brunch with shana, genuine kangaroo hide postcard (already in the mail to one of YOU), making my annual autumn stew, and deck beers.

beer whistling is sort of my thing

scratch our original weekend plans. we decided to skip the cabin and go to the bwca instead. what was suppose to be a friday to sunday trip just turned into a saturday/sunday trip due to some minor car issues friday. that ended up being a good thing though, because we got to check out duluth's first annual oktoberfest. Keg throwing, tasty food, beer steins, and polka dancing. it was an event not to be missed. plus, it was right next to a huge park: beer+ swings = super fun. (Although we all agreed the seahorse on a spring was by far the funnest).

one of the best things about duluth is that you can be out socializing, going to events, and the next day you can pack up, drive 2 hours, and be in the complete wilderness. on saturday, ben and I hopped in the subaru with our canoe and camped on our very own island in brule lake. it was a gorgeous trip and I can't wait to show you more picture later this week.

Yes, I bought one.Look closely. Can you see him peeking at us? The best corn I've ever had. If you ever go to the Rustic Inn get order the "Elote"

Highlights: Moonlight swimming, bonfires, Pimm's cups, hiking up the shore, Mexican corn on the cob, girls night in, overflowing garden, skulls for sale, hoppy beer, and packing my lunch for work (whaa?).

Between out vegetable garden and CSA share we have enough veggies to feed our entire block I think. Soon we will have more zucchini, yellow squash, and tomatoes to know what to do with. I'm thinking salsa and a perhaps a grilling party. My favorite vegetable of choice so far are the purple haze carrots with the white middle. They're almost too pretty (and magical looking) to eat.

My solo weekend went very well. I kept it pretty tame and enjoyed having the house to myself. I think I will be even more thankful for it once next Friday comes along. Ben and I will be celebrating 5 years of marriage this weekend then I am off to Vegas for Project for a week. I can't even begin to imagine how hot it's going to be there since I've been slowly morphing into a puddle these last weeks. Today's humidity is almost unbearable. Fall is looking really good right now.

I am heading to Canada for a long weekend. Ben's dad has a house on Lake Superior just over the border. We're planning on eating mass amounts of home cooked meals, drinking wine his dad made, and fishing. I'll leave you with some internet action and these super rad prints I just found in my "I want" folder. I can't remember where I found these (if it was you let me know!). I like how they sum everything down to a few key factors.

What a busy busy weekend. My friend Kelly (cute girl in hat) came up from the cities and stayed with me Thursday night. We caught her up on all the new restaurants in Duluth and checked out our old stomping grounds for lunch Friday. I didn't spend as much time outside as I wanted, but I did get out of the house for some estate sales (scored that table for $8), ran 9 miles (eeep!), and baked this rhubarb tart that I found here. It was SO GOOD. We ate it warm with vanilla ice cream. Thanks Stephanie. It was a real treat and so easy to make! Ben and I were also watching our second favorite pup in the world-Ruby. She's a Vizsla that has known Argos since he was a baby. It was so sweet watching them cuddle and kiss each other.

This week I'm planning on updating Hello Victory (lots of major finds), and getting things organized before we head to Canada this weekend. Can you believe it's going to be Memorial weekend already? Geeeez.
