Better late than never, right? Last weekend I made it down to the cities in celebration of Kelly's birthday. I got there early so we could get our hair done at Denny Kemp. Kelly chopped off 5 inches and ended up with the cutest cut. Then we met up with friends for dinner at Barrio followed by drinks and karaoke at the Uptown VFW. Kelly was animal/house sitting so I got to stay with her at the house and hangout with 1 cat, 3 dogs, fish, a bird, and 2 turtles. So fun.

Between Molly's visit two weekends ago and Kelly and Leslie staying with me this last weekend, I have been getting some SERIOUS girl time in. I feel so lucky since they live 3 hours away, or in Molly's case- a world away. We spent all weekend dining at our favorite restaurants, dancing till bar close, and sitting on my couch all of Sunday eating potato chips and watching Poison Ivy. Ohh yeah....

beer whistling is sort of my thing

scratch our original weekend plans. we decided to skip the cabin and go to the bwca instead. what was suppose to be a friday to sunday trip just turned into a saturday/sunday trip due to some minor car issues friday. that ended up being a good thing though, because we got to check out duluth's first annual oktoberfest. Keg throwing, tasty food, beer steins, and polka dancing. it was an event not to be missed. plus, it was right next to a huge park: beer+ swings = super fun. (Although we all agreed the seahorse on a spring was by far the funnest).

one of the best things about duluth is that you can be out socializing, going to events, and the next day you can pack up, drive 2 hours, and be in the complete wilderness. on saturday, ben and I hopped in the subaru with our canoe and camped on our very own island in brule lake. it was a gorgeous trip and I can't wait to show you more picture later this week.

This last weekend was a lot of fun. Sunday was a beautiful day and Leslie and I spent the day at the beach before getting ready for our sailboat bbq. 20 or so of our closest friends showed up to the docks to grill, drink cheap beer, and catch up. We had a few friends in town that had been traveling the world so it was great to finally see them and hear their stories. Our friend Megan and her boyfriend just got done biking 3,000 miles around Cuba and Guatemala!

Kelly was my witness at our wedding. She has a dear place in my heart. She also was the DJ for the dance party we ended up having at April's later on in the evening. Derek is the owners of one of my favorite restaurants here in Duluth. I just discovered my new favorite summer drink at his bar: Death's Door Gin and tonic with rhubarb bitters. Amazing.

After the sailboat party we headed the Zinema movie theater where we were lucky enough to have a whole theater to ourselves! Leslie had been collecting and putting together pictures from the past 6 years of a lot of our friends and we got to watch it on the big screen! It was so special to know everyone in those pictures is still a part of my life and how amazing my friendships are.

The evening ended with a dance party at April and Chris's house where we danced our pants off (literally for some) to DJ Raptor Face Kelly.

Before Kelly and Leslie headed back Monday we drove up the North Shore along Lake Superior to get lunch at the Scenic Cafe. It's a special place to us because this is where we met! We all worked there as servers in college. On our days off we use to drive up the shore for hours just drinking coffee and talking. I'm lucky enough we still get to do that every once in awhile.

It got up to 80 degrees here yesterday! Total beach weather and that's just what I did. My friend Mo and I packed up and headed for the sandy beach. It was perfect. In the evening I held book club at my house and we ended up having a fire in the backyard with s'mores. Summer is off to a good start.

My dear friend Kelly is coming into town today to visit. She hasn't been up here in awhile so I'm excited she will be coming when Duluth is at it's finest. That being said I wish you all an early great weekend. See you Monday!

weekend nutshell.

These photo's don't really show you how I spent my time over the weekend at all. I didn't even make those tofu nuggets. Ben did. I did eat them though :) The weather was windy and overcast so much of my time was spent eating out and watching movies. I attended a lovely baby shower, and then sat at the movie theater for 7 hours watching Twin Peaks. Sadly, I wimped out before the end and made a quick appearance at a friend's 30th birthday before heading to bed. Sunday was spent cleaning, cooking, and having a much needed lunch date with some friends followed by dinner with baby mama friend Mo and her husband Dan.

On a complete side note: Ben and I were driving up Lake Avenue the other day. Windows down, waiting at a red light we see a pregnant woman wearing a belly shirt walking up the steep hill. A blazer pulls over and a man shouts "Hey there hot mama with that unit!". Ben and I were all smiles for the rest of the car ride. What IS the "unit"? The unborn baby? I'm not too sure, but I'm totally stealing that line now. There are some clever creepsters out there let me tell you. By they way, the "hot mama with the unit" was totally digging it too.

Oh yeah- Ben's little brother gave Argos this costume. He's suppose to be Darth Vader. Argos was completely stunned and I think a little disappointed in us that we would make him our evening entertainment.

Have I mentioned I have pretty amazing friends? My friend Nick brought back these gifts for me from his travels around the world. When he's not working in Antarctica or Greenland he's traveling through Nepal, the Galapagos Islands, or climbing mountains. Every so often he'll return to the states for a few weeks and make a trip up to Duluth for a couple days. This time he brought me back a Russian mathematics book, a pouch and earrings from the equator, stones from Kathmandu, and coral from the Galapagos. What a lucky gal I am to have such a good friend. Thanks Nick!

Do you have any fun plans for the weekend? I have another eventful weekend ahead of me. A good friends baby shower, Twin Peaks marathon, training, 30th birthday party, a hike or two, and hopefully some estate sales and something involving absolutely NOTHING.

weekend flashback

Thanks to Leslie and Taylor I just received some pictures from last weekends birthday extravaganza. The festivities started at their house for a homemade Pasole dinner. Pasole is a delicious Mexican soup that you top with cheese, lettuce, peppers, radish, onion, and lime. Our friend Pam made the meal and it was SO GOOD. After dinner we headed to the dive bar Vegas Lounge for some karaoke action until close. THEN we went Leslie's boyfriend's house (Sam ) who happens to live in a 3,000 sq. foot loft perfect for dance parties and other debauchery. Against our better judgement we stayed here until the wee hours of the morning. The rest of the weekend was filled with more food, an art opening, and a 6-mile run. Thanks guys for the wonderful weekend! Note: The ungodly large bouquet was sent to Leslie from a client.

The last few days have be so great. Molly stayed with us and we caught up by checking out all the restaurants that have opened up here while she was away, grilling, shopping, and walking by the lake. The lake was SO beautiful the other night and this huge ship was just chilling out there for hours. It was a good reminder why I live here. I love those moments.

Molly also brought me these shoes she found while thrifting. How awesome are they? I was so excited to slip them in feet to find out they fit. I have pretty amazing friends.

Tonight we're taking off for the cities for a friends wedding reception tomorrow and then we're off to Lutsen for a few nights to hangout with friends who rented a villa by the lake. It should be a good time. Ben's birthday is Tuesday, so next week is just full of fun stuff. I probably won't be back to blogging until mid next week. I hope you all have a great weekend!
